Owl Cam/Valmont/ Fort St. Vrain/Colorado

Jemand aus dem Maine Forum hat eine Mail nach Valmont geschrieben.
Man vermutet, dass es evtl zu einem Kampf mit einer anderen Eule gekommen sein könne und dass sie evtl. Blutspuren im Gesicht hat.
Es ist so schade, nun geht schon das 2. Jahr hintereinander die Brut verloren.
Hoffentlich ist nichts ernsthaftes mit dem Weibchen.

Aus dem Birdcam ForumI emailed Dr. Pat Redig of the University of Minnesota's Raptor Center about Snowflake's face and included a cam image. Dr. Redig's reply is:
Hi, Juanita - my guess, based on observation of similar occurrences, is that she perched on the edge or rim of a chimney and took a blast of hot effluent gases in the face - like at a foundry or something where they intermittently fire the furnace and feed a lot of air into it so that a flume of hot gas rises quickly up the chimney. Maybe other causes, but this is one I've seen.

Jemand hat das Bild an das Greifvogel Zentrum der Universität Minnesota gemailt und Dr. Pat Redig ist der Meinung, basierend auf Erfahrungen mit ähnlichen Fällen, dass Snowflake auf einem Kamin gesessen hat und plötzlich heiße Gase ins Gesicht bekam. Zum Beispiel auf dem Schornstein einer Gießerei, wo plötzlich viel heiße Luft durch den Schornstein geblasen wird.
Vielleicht gibt es auch andere Ursachen, aber so etwas hat er schon gesehen.

Thanks for your support and concern for the Valmont GHO's. The adult female is currently perched outside the nest just out of the camera's view. Observing her with binoculars from about 100 yards away, she appears to have dried blood on her face. The adult male is roosting in a favorite spot directly below the nest and he appears to be healthy. There has been a third GHO, probably female based on size, in the immediate area for over a week. I am speculating that the nesting female got into a territorial fight with the intruder last night. There has been no sign of the third owl today. Hopefully, the female's injuries are superficial and she will recover quickly.
GHO's have been nesting at the Valmont power plant for over 30 years. In the 13 years I have been watching them, only 1 nest has failed, although there has been plenty of excitement. They are remarkably adaptable. The nest cameras give us incredible insight into the challenges they face. Their three eggs are almost certainly nonviable after being exposed for so long. They may possibly lay a second clutch in two weeks or so like they did several years ago.
Be assured that we are keeping a close watch on the owls. I will submit another post if anything significant occurs here. Thanks again for your support.

Jemand aus Valmont hat beide Eulen gesehen und die weibliche Eule sitzt außerhalb vom Nest und es sieht aus als hätte sie getrocknetes Blut im Gesicht. Das Männchen sitzt auf seinem Stammplatz außerhalb der Box und scheint unverletzt.
Eine dritte Great Horned Owl wurde vor Ort beobachtet. Von der Größe her wahrscheinlich ein weibliches Tier. Man vermutet nun, dass es einen Kampf um das Territorium gab.
Die Eier werden verloren sein, da sie so lange icht bebrütet wurden.
Seit 30 Jahren nisten an dem Kraftwerk Eulen. In den 13 Jahren die sie nun beobachtet werden, gab es nur einen Brutausfall.
Sie hoffen nun, dass es in 2 Wochen evtl. ein Nachgelege gibt.
Sie werden die Eulen weiter beobachten und sich melden, sobald es etwas Neues gibt.

The Great Horned Owls have had a difficult week. We are saddened to report that the eggs have likely failed. The female owl left the nest box for an extended period and we believe she got into a territorial fight with another female owl at the plant. She seems to be recovering from any possible injuries. She has been resting and preening in the nest box. The adult male is still on the property, but unfortunately, the third owl is present too. We are hopeful our pair of owls will produce a second clutch of eggs in approximately two weeks as they have done in the past. Rest assured we will continue to keep a close watch on the owls at Valmont Station.
Das Eulenpaar hatte ein schwierige Woche.Wir sind sehr traurig,das Gelege wurde aufgegeben-das Weibchen verließ für einen längeren Zeitraum das Nest,wir vermuten das sie in einen territorialen Kampf mit einer anderen Eule verwickelt war. Die Verletzungen die sie davon trug scheinen aber gut verheilt zu sein. Die 3.Eule befindet sich immer noch vor Ort. Wir hoffen das das Eulenpaar in ca. 2 Wochen eventuell nochmals nachlegt. Wir werden weiterhin das Eulenpaar genaustens beobachten.
