Storks of the Vetschau eyrie were banded ahead of schedule
The storks of the Vetschau eyrie were banded ahead of schedule. Our banding technician, Mrs. Illig of Luckau, undertook only one banding tour with the equipment of 'enviaM-Netzbetreibers MITNETZ STROM' this year. "Because of the tremendous loss of stork chicks this year, more deceased ones were removed from the nests than banded. During my forty-year banding experience nothing like this has happened before", says Mrs. Illig. Up to a 70% loss of chicks is expected. Every day new information is received. Luckily so far this year, significant losses have not touched the Vetschau stork eyrie.
Our stork chicks have received the 'ELSA' bands above the stork elbow. At the same time names were assigned to the ring numbers which had been chosen by the 'Wirbelwind' daycare centre in Kleinmachnow.
The children had visited us a little time ago and presented to the NABU RV Calau a donation for the protection of storks which they had raised through a cake bazaar and other activities.

Thank U Tina! As we commented, if U like, U could post any pics U want from Ur vault... Or we do it with credits... U tell! :)
I FINALLY had a chance to catch up on all the photos, videos and news of the young storks. I just missed the banding but as usual Tina's photos were great.
Very happy to see that there are still 3 storkletts in the nest, but still worried about the little one.
It is so absolutely wonderful to see that Cico and Luca have managed to bring up 3 wonderful youngsters this year.
Thinking back, they have been subject to heat, heavy rain, thunderstorms and very windy conditions ... and they have prevailed it all.
Little Frodo have been fighting for his life through a very uncertain start. I can't help admiring that little fellow. But also his siblings should have some admiration, as they haven't picked on him. They could just as easily have pushed him away. They did not.
All in all ... wonderful parent storks ...wonderful cubs.
I also want to thank everyone for their nice pictures and comments.
Now, I only hope they will get on with their lives ... have a safe trip to Africa and back... and then next year we will follow Cico and Luna again.
Thx everyone, thx Storchenzentrum.
Cya, Lene
