The Ringing of the Chicks 29th June Posted on June 30, 2015 by charlotteranger
Since we only had two satellite transmitters to attach, one of the chicks was ringed as Blue FR2 in the nest and left there for the duration of the tagging, providing reassurance for the adults as at least one chick was always visible. The other two were carefully lowered to the ground where the rings Blue FR3 and Blue FR4 were swiftly attached along with the satellite transmitters. Guessing from the weight of these two, it is possible that FR3 is a male and FR4 is a female as female chicks generally weigh more, however we cannot be sure.
Maya protested a bit, but she was not overly concerned. She flew around above the bay and intermittently alarm-called, until the deed was done and her chicks were returned to her, safe and sound. The whole process took less than an hour to complete. The equipment was prepared, the boat launched, and a ladder was extended up to the nest, which Tim climbed and brought the chicks down to the boat...
The chicks are absolutely gorgeous! To be so close to them was an indisputable privilege. They have such beautiful feathers, and enchanting deep amber eyes. All three chicks are in perfect health and look fantastic. They were placed in a comfortable tray for a minute or two to settle, then were ringed and weighed one by one. Their ring numbers are S1, S2 and S3. Based on weight and bill size, it has been determined that S1 and S3 are female, and S2 is male...

We're delighted to say that all three chicks have been ringed and they all looked in absolutely perfect condition.
Bobby Bach is a male (Blue W3) - we'll now call him 'Brenig'
Bob 2 is a female (Blue W2) - she is called 'Celyn'
Bob 1 is a female (we think! - see blog tomorrow) Blue W1 - She is called 'Merin'
The three chicks were out of the nest for 44 minutes in total and everything went very smoothly - thanks again to our friend and ringer extraordinaire, Tony Cross.
