Wanderfalken in San Jose, California

Falcons get new home atop San Jose City Hall

There's an ancient expression that goes something like: Don't (bleep) where you eat. The wise adage is true, even if you're a falcon.
After several years of living, eating, mating — and taking care of other bodily functions — the two falcons who call a ledge on top of San Jose City Hall their home got a new nest on Friday, made of plywood and about 300 pounds of gravel.
"In the wild, falcons change their ledges or nests every few years because they get soiled," said Santa Cruz Predatory Bird Research Group Coordinator Glenn Stewart, who build the frame of the nest in his backyard before installing it. "We thought there may be an advantage to changing the soil."
The nest cost about $150, Stewart said, and was paid for by donations to his research group. Unlike other birds, falcons don't build their homes. Stewart said they nest in caves and on ledges made of stone and sand.
The last time the San Jose falcons got a new nest was about three years ago, when they were first spotted on top of City Hall. The female, Clara, has been a constant, while her male lovers have been fly-by-night. Her current mate is Esteban Colbert.
Their offspring, hatched last spring, have flown the coop.
There was a slight hitch with the timing of Friday's new nest as the elevator inside the building was delayed for at least an hour. But once Stewart was on the roof, he worked diligently without problems to hoist 100-pound bags of gravel and

lay the material inside his plywood frame.
Stewart said this time of year was chosen to replace the old nest with the new because the falcons' hormonal level is at the lowest. Still, he wore a hard hat just in case. Clara came by, "cakking" at the scientist at one point before he finished the job about noon, and then she and Esteban flew off.
Falcon fans are raising private funds to replace and upgrade San Jose's FalconCam at City Hall. To learn more or donate, visit www.sanjoseperegrines.org. To see the falcons on the cam, go to the FalconCam at sanjose.granicus.com/MediaPlayer.php?publish_id=91.
